Jacques Brel Quartet
The Jacques Brel Quartet was founded in Brussels, where Brel was born and lived. The quartet aims to pay tribute to Brel and to the city that he helped shape with his influential music. Its members are Giovanna Carrillo Fantappiè, Xander Michiels, Kobe Severens and Senne Steuckers, all Master’s students at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where they study under the guidance of M. Antigoni Goni.
Making their Madrid debut, the quartet pays tribute to the city and its rich tradition of guitar music. The programme opens with Federico Moreno Torroba’s celebrated Estampas, a work that helped popularise the guitar quartet repertoire, followed by Joaquín Turina’s La oración del torero. Originally composed for lute quartet before being transcribed for string quartet and string orchestra, the latter work takes on a fresh, plucked sonority in its arrangement for four guitars.
The programme culminates in the premiere of Outside In (2020) by David del Puerto. Reflecting on the solace that music can offer in difficult times, the piece brings a contemporary and deeply personal perspective to the programme.
